Anna & Sam’s Durham Engagement Session
Duke Gardens + A Favorite Durham Date Spot
Engagement Photos at Duke Gardens in Durham, NC
Anna and Sam’s engagement session was a perfect mix of beautiful scenery and places that are meaningful to them as a couple. We explored Duke Gardens and one of Sam and Anna’s favorite date night spots to create an engagement session that felt more like a movie than a photoshoot.
We started their session at Sarah P. Duke Gardens, one of the most popular locations for engagement photos in Durham. The gardens offer a variety of beautiful backdrops, from open green spaces to winding pathways and seasonal flowers.
Anna and Sam are incredibly kind and easygoing people, and photographing them together felt very natural. Sam is especially attentive to Anna, and the way he looks at her makes it very clear how much he loves her.
As we explored the gardens, the light began to soften into golden hour, which made for some really beautiful moments throughout the session. We walked through different parts of the gardens, stopping whenever the light or scenery caught our attention.
Duke Gardens is always one of my favorite places for engagement photos in Durham because it offers such a peaceful setting while still being right in the city.
A Durham Date Night Engagement Session
After spending some time at the gardens, we headed to one of Anna and Sam’s favorite date spots in Durham—a local pool hall where they often spend time together.
Incorporating places that are meaningful to couples is one of my favorite ways to make engagement sessions feel more personal. Instead of only taking photos in one location, this approach allows the session to feel more like a snapshot of a real evening together.
Anna and Sam played a game of pool, threw some darts, and shared a couple of beers while we continued photographing.
Sessions like this often end up feeling a little cinematic—almost like small scenes from a movie. Moving between locations, doing things you genuinely enjoy together, and letting moments unfold naturally helps tell a fuller story about who you are as a couple. Rather than just a set of posed portraits, the photos begin to feel like moments pulled from a real evening together.
These kinds of environments also lead to the most relaxed and candid photos because couples are doing something they already love.
Why Durham is a Great Place for Engagement Photos
Durham is a great city for engagement sessions because it offers a mix of natural landscapes and urban locations.
Couples can start with garden portraits at Sarah P. Duke Gardens, explore the historic campus of Duke University, and then head downtown for restaurants, bars, or other meaningful spots.
This variety makes it easy to create engagement sessions that feel personal while also giving couples a range of different photo settings.
Looking Ahead to Their Wedding
I’ll be photographing Anna and Sam’s wedding next April, and after spending this time with them, I’m even more excited for their day.
They’re such a thoughtful, genuine couple, and it’s always a privilege to document this season of life for people who are so clearly excited about building a life together.
