Sol & Ian’s Space Cowboy Disco Wedding at Windy Hill Farms
Flower crowns, wispy florals, a pink cowboy hat, and sparkly pants. Sol and Ian's wedding at Windy Hill Farms in Cedar Grove, North Carolina, had a pretty good range.
The first half of the day felt almost otherworldly. Soft flowers, colorful details, and a slow afternoon at the farmhouse gave everything a dreamy quality. By the end of the night, there were fringe sleeves flying across the dance floor and a whole lot of dancing. Somewhere between the two, Sol and Ian got married surrounded by the people who know them best.
It's a pretty great way to spend a day.
A First Look on the Farmhouse Porch
Sol and Ian's first look happened on the back porch of the farmhouse, away from the gathering of friends and family.
They spent a little time together, laughing and leaning into each other before the ceremony. No big production, just a chance to take a breath and enjoy being together before the rest of the day unfolded.
I always find it interesting how different a wedding day can feel in these quieter pockets. There's the anticipation of everything still to come, but there's also the comfort of being with the person you've chosen to do all of this with. For a little while, the wedding becomes much less about the event and much more about the two people at the center of it. In all honesty, these are the moments on a wedding day that I really connect with. I love seeing the quiet love that tow people share when they don’t have to mask or perform for anyone.
A Sunset Ceremony with Their Favorite People
As the sun started to dip, everyone gathered for the ceremony.
Sol and Ian kept the guest list close, surrounded by friends and family who clearly meant the world to them. The affection between everyone was hard to miss. It was in the way people gathered around them, the energy in the group, and the feeling that nobody needed an explanation for why they were there.
The ceremony marked a shift in the day. The getting-ready details and anticipation gave way to the actual reason everyone had come together.
And then, of course, it was time to celebrate.
Enter: Space Cowboy Disco
If the first part of the wedding was all soft edges and delicate flowers, the reception had other plans.
Sol changed into sparkly pants, a white suit jacket with long fringe on the sleeves, and a pink cowboy hat. The Space Cowboy Disco theme was officially in full swing.
It's hard to imagine a better way to change the energy of a wedding reception. The look was bold, a little ridiculous in the best possible way, and completely committed to the bit. After a day of romantic florals and sunset light, the glitter and fringe felt like a whole new chapter.
This is one of the things I love about photographing weddings that don't take themselves too seriously. There's room for the sentimental parts and the strange parts. You can have flower crowns and a sunset ceremony, then spend the evening dancing in sparkly pants. There's no need to make everything match or keep the same mood from beginning to end.
Honestly, I think more weddings could use a little of that energy.
The Part Where Everyone Dances
The night ended the way a Space Cowboy Disco wedding should: with a packed dance floor, plenty of movement, and a ridiculous amount of joy.
By then, the careful details of the morning had given way to something much harder to plan for. People were dancing, laughing, and celebrating with the kind of freedom that comes from being surrounded by your favorite people.
Sol and Ian's wedding at Windy Hill Farms was romantic without being too serious, thoughtfully put together without feeling overly formal, and full of personality from start to finish.

Windy Hill Farms in Cedar Grove is a lovely example of what a North Carolina countryside wedding can look like when a couple makes the day their own. Just outside the Durham area, it's a setting for a celebration that can feel intimate, personal, and a little outside the ordinary.
As a Durham-area wedding photographer, I'm drawn to weddings with character. The unconventional outfits, the sentimental details, the people who get a little emotional during the ceremony, and the friends who take over the dance floor later that night.
